About

Winter Pickle Press, founded in 2019 by Becky Compeau, designs and prints linocut greeting cards in a small workshop in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Each design is drawn and carved into a linoleum block, then hand-printed by me using a small etching press. This process results in small variations between prints (due to inking, pressure, color mixing, even humidity), making each card original and unique. Send a special piece of art, not just a card! :)

Originally from Brighton, England, I moved to the United States in 2012 and started linocut printing and etching in San Diego in my spare time while I worked for an art conservation center. After moving to Pittsburgh in the summer of 2015, my printing slowed down a lot while I worked for a local non-profit organization, until 2019 when I got heavily back into linocut printing and started Winter Pickle Press. Printing appeals to me so much because it draws together art and design, puzzle-solving, and even a little bit of press engineering! There are so many variables to think about with every design and every print, and you never really know whether you’ve achieved what you were aiming for until the “reveal” – the moment when you pull a print from the press. When a design prints well it is extremely gratifying!

Operating in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way is really important to me. I use 100% recycled paper and envelopes (up to 100% post-consumer waste), safe water-based inks, and compostable plant-based protective sleeves. I also use recycled and recyclable paper packaging for all orders shipped.
